The cathedral in Puy-en-Velay was a stop on one of the many pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, Spain. After having their pilgrimage credentials stamped here, they would descend these steps and continue on their way to Santiago, with at least three months of walking ahead of them (and then they had to walk back home!)
